Photosynthesis
In one sentence: Plants make their own food using sunlight, water and a gas called carbon dioxide.
Think of it like this: Think of a leaf as a tiny kitchen. Sunlight is the energy for the stove, water and carbon dioxide are the ingredients, and the dish that comes out is sugar, the plant's food.
Step by step
- The roots take in water from the soil.
- The leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny holes.
- A green material in the leaves, called chlorophyll, catches sunlight.
- The plant uses that energy to turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar, and it releases oxygen.
Example: Plants and tiny sea algae release much of the oxygen in the air we breathe. That is one big reason to protect forests and oceans.
Remember: Sunlight + water + carbon dioxide gives sugar + oxygen.
